Canada's unemployment rate climbed to a six-month high in October while the economy shed a few thousand jobs, according to Reuters. The report, citing Statistics Canada data released on Friday, showed the jobless rate rising to 6.7% from 6.5% in the prior month, a level last exceeded by the 6.9% rate recorded in April.
The economy lost a net 4,700 jobs in October, bringing total losses for the year to 46,000. The labor market has failed to post average job gains this year as trade tensions between the United States and Canada worsened and businesses cut costs, the report said.
On an average monthly basis, the Canadian economy has lost 4,590 jobs so far this year, compared with average gains of 17,606 in 2025 and 33,675 in 2024.
Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a gain of 13,600 jobs for October, following a loss of 68,300 jobs in September, and had expected the unemployment rate to remain at 6.5%.
All the job losses were concentrated in full-time employment, which shrank by 18,100 positions, and were almost entirely driven by a decline of 52,500 private-sector employees. Statistics Canada said this was the first private-sector decline since February.
Employment in wholesale and retail trade contracted by 28,800 jobs, the largest decline in October, followed by transportation and warehousing, which fell by 10,100 positions. Construction employment increased by 16,000.
The unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 24 rose 0.7 percentage points to 13.7%, while the jobless rate for people aged 55 and older increased to 5.5%.
Growth in average hourly wages for permanent employees slowed to 2% year-on-year in October from 2.3% in September, Statistics Canada said.
The report also indicated that more than one in four people in the employable population aged 15 and older found it difficult to meet financial needs for transportation, housing, food, clothing and other necessary expenses over the previous four weeks.
